Summit of Mt. Vesuvius

The summit area of Mt. Vesuvius is quite complex, owing to its long history of volcanic activity. The principal structures can be seen in the profile of the volcano in the banner image above. The old Monte Somma rim, formed by the collapse of a large ancestral volcano, is the lower peak on the left. The young cone with the active crater of Vesuvius is the higher peak to the right.

You can visit the cone using the 3 panoramic images located on the map below. Just click on the red markers and enjoy the views. Explore the crater, and answer the questions in your field notebook.
